ST. PAUL Youth Martavis Bryant Jersey , Minn. (AP) Something seems to click for Brad Marchand in overtime.

The Bruins forward entered Sunday night’s game with four overtime goals this season. He added to that total to lift his team yet again.

Marchand scored 28 seconds into overtime for his league-leading fifth overtime goal and a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild.

Article continues below ...
”Overtime specifically, especially this month, he’s sure come through for us,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. ”But he’s an elite player so we expect him to get his looks every night because he’s hard on the puck and a heck of a competitor Marshall Newhouse Jersey Bills , so it doesn’t surprise me.”

Tuukka Rask made 24 saves and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, who improved to 47-17-10.

Marchand’s winner came after a pass off the boards by Torey Krug gave Marchand a shot at the net from the left faceoff circle. Wild defenseman Matt Dumba got turned around on the play and couldn’t catch up with Marchand.

”You need a lot of things to go right but sometimes you benefit from plays, sometimes you don’t,” Marchand said. ”I think this year I’ve been playing with a lot of guys who are making good plays and I’m benefiting from that.”

Marchand got his second goal in two games and his third in a four-game span. His 33rd of the season was his eighth game-winner Brandon Parker Jersey Raiders , tying a career high. Marchand also assisted on the Bruins’ first goal.

Boston appeared to score first when Noel Acciari found the back of the net early in the second period. However, the goal was waved off after officials reviewed it and ruled that Boston’s Riley Nash ran into goalie Alex Stalock.

Just over a minute later, the Bruins beat Stalock on one that counted. Pastrnak notched his 30th of the season – and second in two games – when his one-timer on a feed from Patrice Bergeron sailed past Stalock.

Bergeron’s assist came in his first game back after missing a month with a fractured foot. The center last played on Feb. 25. He also assisted on Marchand’s goal.

”It’s always getting the legs and the timing and the execution back,” Bergeron said. ”I felt like it was getting better as the game went on.”

Minnesota thought it had the tying goal later in the second Youth DJ Chark Jersey , but a whistle sounded before Jason Zucker poked the puck past Rask. A replay also showed the puck under Rask’s pad may have crossed the goal line, but a review determined the play was blown dead before the goal.

”You knew the puck was over the line,” Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said. ”It’s just a question when did it go over the line.”

Rask had a number of key saves in the first two periods, including a stop of Zach Parise on a short-handed chance and on a backhand shot by Marcus Foligno to preserve the one-goal lead.

The Wild broke through midway through the third. Captain Mikko Koivu scored his 14th goal when he collected a rebound from Matt Dumba’s shot off the end boards and tucked it between Rask and the post.

It was Koivu’s second goal in a 10-game stretch.

Minnesota has earned a point in five straight games.

Stalock got the start in net after Devan Dubnyk started Saturday’s win against Nashville. Stalock made 26 saves and fell to 10-11-2.

”It was a playoff team again tonight so I think we see how tight games are going to be Fred Warner Jersey 49ers ,” Stalock said. ”It’s a bounce here or there. That’s the difference.”

FOXBOROUGH Brandon Parker Jersey Raiders , Mass. (AP) The defending Super Bowl champion Patriots have lost Tom Brady’s go-to receiver and their defensive leader to season-ending injuries.

Yet, as they entered the halfway point of their season following a defense-led 21-13 win over the Chargers on Sunday , they are showing the resolve of a team that’s capable of making another run at the Lombardi Trophy.

Los Angeles (3-5) is again lamenting a missed opportunity against New England , but also likes how it’s trending after a 0-4 start to 2017.

Article continues below ...
After losing two of its first four games, New England has won four straight games. It has been buoyed during that stretch mostly by a defense that will have to finish the season without captain Dont’a Hightower, who suffered a torn pectoral muscle in his shoulder in last week’s win over Atlanta. That came after receiver Julian Edelman was lost in the preseason to a knee injury.

The defense is also making things work without cornerback Stephon Gilmore Youth Braden Smith Jersey , an offseason pickup who has missed the past four games with concussion and ankle issues.

The Patriots (6-2) have given up just 51 points over their past four wins after allowing three of their first four opponents to score 30 or more.

”I think we’re playing well with each other,” linebacker Kyle Van Noy said. ”We have a lot of new guys and a lot of young guys. It takes time to jell and that’s kind of what happened is we’re just trying to jell and get to know each other.”

While the defense is figuring things out, the offense has regressed in recent weeks. It had just one touchdown Sunday and is averaging just 22 points over its past four games. That is down from 32 points per game over its first four games.

”We’re not scoring as many points as we’re capable of scoring, I know that,” quarterback Tom Brady said. ”I wish there was a simple answer to it, and the simple word would be execution. … I wish it would be better Youth Jordan Whitehead Jersey , but we’re not. But we’ll just keep after it.”

Brady was 32 for 47 for 333 yards and a touchdown. He has 44 games with at least 300 passing yards and no interceptions. That is tied with New Orleans’ Drew Brees for the most such games with a single team in NFL history.

Despite having their three-game win streak stopped, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers also is hopeful as his team now heads into its bye.

”Something you can take from it is – there’s no participation trophies, but we’re right there,” he said. ”We came to their place and we’re right there.”

HALFWAY THERE: Chargers coach Anthony Lynn likes to break the season into quarters, and it’s not hard to see that his team was better in its second four games than in its first.

They have not been to the playoffs since 2013.

Since coach Bill Belichick’s arrival, the Chargers have had five different coaches. New England is 8-3 against them during that stretch.

SPECIAL TEAMS WOES: If the Chargers are going to turn a corner in their final eight games Nick Nelson Jersey Raiders , they must start with cleaning up their issues on special teams.

It was their biggest weakness against New England.

Travis Benjamin made a series of bad decisions on a punt return , leading to a safety that broke a 7-7 tie and set up the Patriots on a short field for a field goal. Los Angeles also missed a field goal, gave up a 71-yard kickoff return to Dion Lewis and botched a series of kickoff returns that repeatedly left them inside their 20.

”Last week, he made a play on a punt return to help us win the game. This week he made a bad decision,” Lynn said. ”That was a huge play in the game. You have to have some awareness of where you are on the football field. And he did not.”

BOSA IS BOSS: Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa had a sack. Bosa has 19 sacks in 20 games, the most sacks by a player in his first 20 games to begin a career since the sack became an official stat in 1982.

FIRST-HALF PROWESS: Despite a pair of home losses Jordan Akins Jersey Texans , the Patriots are again one of the NFL’s best teams as they reach the halfway point of the regular season.

New England is an NFL-best 97-38 in the first half of the season since Belichick’s arrival in 2000.

The Patriots are off to a 6-2 start or better for the 16th time in team history and for the fifth straight season. They’ve won at least six games in the first half 11 times under Belichick.

BRADY VS. RIVERS: Brady is 7-0 against Rivers head-to-head, including two playoff games.

That’s Brady’s most wins without a loss against any opposing quarterback.

Rivers is just 1-7 against the Patriots (1-4 regular season). His lone victory came in San Diego during the 2008 regular season when Brady was out for the season with a knee injury.

SANTA CLARA Darius Leonard Jersey Colts , Calif. (AP) Jimmy Garoppolo sat down on the dais in between San Francisco general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan, leaned into the microphone and thanked the 49ers and the New England Patriots for the trade that gives him a chance to be a starter in the NFL.

He already passed his first test.

”Kyle will tell you a great quality in a quarterback is taking charge,” Lynch said. ”I thought I was going to go first.”

Article continues below ...
After waiting 3 1/2 years as Tom Brady’s backup in New England, Garoppolo is ready to have the chance to be the starting quarterback of his own team after being traded to San Francisco for a 2018 second-round draft pick.

Garoppolo started two games during his time with the Patriots and has thrown just four passes since getting hurt in his second start in Week 2 of the 2016 season.

”I’m eager to get out there and show what I can do on a Sunday,” Garoppolo said. ”This league is tough. It really is. When you get your opportunity, you have to take advantage of it because you don’t know when you’ll get another.”

That was the feeling as well for the 49ers (0-8), who are off to the worst start in franchise history in the first season under the leadership of Shanahan and Lynch.

They could have waited until free agency and tried to sign Garoppolo without giving up a valuable draft pick. They also could have targeted a more proven player like Kirk Cousins or opted to use what should be a high draft pick on a quarterback.

Instead Jordan Whitehead Jersey Buccaneers , they got a head start on the rebuilding process by acquiring a player they initially tried to get in the offseason but were quickly shot down by the Patriots before they could even make an offer.

”An unbelievable opportunity came our way in the midst of what has really been a tough season,” Lynch said. ”Where we are right now is not fun. … Is that going to fix all our ills? Absolutely not. We had the opportunity to get better as an organization and we took advantage of that.”

Shanahan has had his eyes on Garoppolo since the draft process in 2014 when Shanahan was offensive coordinator in Cleveland. He ranked Garoppolo as one of the top two quarterbacks in that draft but the Browns ended up using their first-round pick on Johnny Manziel instead.

”It starts with ability,” Shanahan said. ”Jimmy has the ability to make plays with his legs and he’s a very good thrower. Most importantly he hangs in that pocket, keeps his eyes downfield and is up for any challenge.”

Garoppolo has little NFL game film to go on but his performance in those two starts last year when Brady was suspended was impressive. He completed 42 of 59 passes for 496 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Niners also looked at his preseason work and at his college tape at Eastern Illinois and believe he answers the questions they have had at quarterback ever since Colin Kaepernick started regressing following a stellar 2013 campaign.

”I don’t think you have to be some quarterback savant to see, albeit in limited time, he’s very impressive Youth Sam Hubbard Jersey ,” Lynch said. ”You have to love the pedigree, where he came from, the organization.”

Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert split the quarterback duties in San Francisco the past two seasons before the new regime decided to go in a different direction. The Niners tried to acquire Garoppolo in the offseason but were unable to and signed free agent Brian Hoyer and drafted C.J. Beathard in the third round instead.

Hoyer, who also began his career as Brady’s backup in New England, started the first six games before being benched for Beathard. Hoyer was never viewed as a long-term option and Beathard struggled in his two starts although he was hampered by a banged-up offensive line that left him under relentless pressure.

Beathard will remain the starter at least for this week’s game against Arizona as Garoppolo learns the new offense.

Even with the trade, the Niners still are well-stocked for the draft. They have New Orleans’ pick in the second round, an extra third-rounder from Chicago and a seventh-rounder from Kansas City.

San Francisco also is projected to have more than $100 million in salary cap room Youth Tre'Quan Smith Jersey , which provides ample space to sign Garoppolo to a long-term deal before he hits free agency or use the franchise tag on him if they can’t.

The Patriots weren’t eager to get rid of Garoppolo and turned down potential deals in the offseason in hopes they could groom him to eventually replace the 40-year-old Brady.

But with Garoppolo hitting free agency next offseason and looking for a chance to start, that looked increasingly difficult to pull off so the Patriots made the move.

”We had probably had, in my opinion, the best quarterback situation in the league for the last, call it 2+ years,” coach Bill Belichick said. ”It’s just not sustainable given the way that things are set up. It’s definitely not something that we wanted to walk away from and I felt like we rode it out as long as we could. We, over a period of time Youth Michael Gallup Jersey , explored every option possible to try and sustain it. But at this point felt like we had to make a decision.”

NOTES: The 49ers also traded CB Rashard Robinson to the Jets for a fifth-round draft pick. … Hoyer was released. … CB Will Redmond was released from IR.

FOXBOROUGH Youth Randall Telfer Jersey , Mass. (AP) The McCourty twins are back together.

The Cleveland Browns traded cornerback Jason McCourty to the New England Patriots on Thursday, reuniting him with his brother Devin. The Browns also sent a seventh-round pick to the Patriots to get a sixth-rounder in return.

”Cleveland it’s been real!” Jason McCourty wrote on the Twitter account the brothers share. ”I wish nothing but the best to the guys in that locker room!”

Article continues below ...
The Browns have been one of the most active teams in the NFL this offseason as they try to rebuild from last season’s 0-16 record. They have already traded for quarterback Tyrod Taylor and three-time Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry, while signing seven free agents, including running back Carlos Hyde.

They also made a deal on Wednesday to send defensive lineman Danny Shelton to New England for a third-round pick in 2019. But the defending AFC champion Patriots have mostly been losing players Youth Josh Allen Jersey , including receiver Danny Amendola, left tackle Nate Solder, defensive back Malcolm Butler and running back Dion Lewis.

After spending his first eight seasons with Tennessee, Jason McCourty Josh Rosen Jersey Cardinals , 30, started 14 games and led the Browns with three interceptions and made 65 tackles last season, the most for any player in the secondary.

He became a locker room leader, but also ruffled feathers by saying the team never should have gone winless after both coach Hue Jackson and new general manager John Dorsey bemoaned the team’s lack of talent.

”The talent in this locker room is not the talent to go win a Super Bowl this year Danny Shelton Jersey Patriots , but this locker room is far more talented than 0-16,” Jason McCourty said following the season-ending loss in Pittsburgh.

”I’m kind of tired of hearing so many people say, even within the organization, is we don’t have the guys or we need more guys. Let’s work with the guys we do have and find ways to win games.”

Also Thursday Justin Bethel Jersey Falcons , the Patriots re-signed running back Rex Burkhead. A 2013 sixth-round draft pick who spent his first four seasons with the Bengals, Burkhead has run for 639 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 64 passes for 542 yards and four touchdowns in his career.

RALEIGH Youth Paul Worrilow Jersey , N.C. (AP) Rod Brind’Amour helped deliver the greatest moment in Carolina Hurricanes’ history – a Stanley Cup championship.

His next challenge is to create more memorable moments as their coach.

The captain of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Cup-winning team has his first head coaching job in the NHL, taking the next step in a career arc that during the past 18 years has brought him from team leader all the way up the coaching ladder – and all with Carolina.

Article continues below ...
”It’s a job, but it’s not,” Brind’Amour said Wednesday. ”It means more to me.”

The Hurricanes gave Brind’Amour a three-year contract, with team owner Tom Dundon declining to discuss the financial terms. But Dundon did praise Brind’Amour for his willingness to put his reputation on the line while trying to things around. Carolina hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009, a nine-year drought that ranks among the longest in NHL history.

”He didn’t need the job,” Dundon said. ”He’s got a good life here Youth Sebastian Janikowski Jersey , he’s well respected and the risk that he’s taking with his reputation and his legacy is real.”

The Hurricanes have changed coaches three times and general managers twice since their last postseason appearance. Another of the franchise’s greats – Hall of Fame player Ron Francis, like Brind’Amour a former team captain – was stripped of the GM’s job during the season and last week had his contract terminated.

Brind’Amour said Dundon and team president Don Waddell, who also added the title of general manager during the shake-up, have ”high expectations, which is huge.

”For whatever reason, our expectations have fallen a little bit here, and we need to raise those Cheap Cordy Glenn Jersey ,” he added.

He also wants to raise the effort level from the players, pledging to push them in much the same way he pushed his teammates during his time as team captain.

”We have a lot of guys in that room that need to give more,” he said. ”I think there’s more there. … They didn’t produce the way they could produce. … We’re going to demand more from our players, at the end of the day, and I think they want that.”

That’s an approach that helped turn the Hurricanes into winners before, and now he wants to see if it will work again.

Brind’Amour came in Carolina in January 2000 in a trade with Philadelphia – and never left. He helped lead the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup final in 2002, ascended to the captaincy before the 2005-06 season and ended that year by becoming the first Carolina player to hoist the Cup – in the process Youth Ed Dickson Jersey , creating the franchise’s signature image that remains on display throughout PNC Arena.

”There are guys that wear the C,” former teammate Aaron Ward said, ”and there are guys that ARE the C.”

The two-time Selke Award winner as the NHL’s best defensive forward retired in 2010 and ranks third in club history in assists (299), fourth in points (473) and fifth in games played (694). His post-playing career began in a front-office position – director of forwards development – but became an assistant coach in 2011, first for Paul Maurice, then Kirk Muller and Bill Peters – who opted out of the final year of his contract, creating the opportunity for Brind’Amour.

”I actually remember asking (then-GM Jim Rutherford) at the time Cheap Uchenna Nwosu Jersey , `Hey, put me upstairs with you,’ and he kept pushing me down” toward a future in coaching, Brind’Amour said. ”It’s the closest thing to playing. … You’re in the fight with the guys. I felt like it’s something I have a passion for, and the more I got into it … I wanted to take a chance on taking charge. I stuck my neck out, and here we are.”

TEMPE Vinny Curry Jersey Buccaneers , Ariz. (AP) Say goodbye to ”No risk it, no biscuit.”

Bruce Arians, one of the NFL’s biggest personalities, is retiring from coaching after five mostly successful and usually entertaining seasons as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

The 65-year-old two-time NFL Coach of the Year, known for his Kangol-style hats, colorful vocabulary and wide-open ”no risk it, no biscuit” offense, announced the decision in an emotional session with the media on Monday.

Article continues below ...
”It’s been an unbelievable journey Cheap Sam Hubbard Jersey ,” he said. ”The tears you see are really tears of joy and peace. I’ll miss the players. I’ll miss coming out of the locker room hearing the national anthem because it still gets to me.”

Arians said he told the players of his decision Sunday after the team’s 26-24 win at Seattle and the players never leaked it to reporters.

”And they lied to you because of that,” he said. ”There’s really no greater feeling in the world to know your players have your back.”

Of the reason for the retirement, Arians said, ”Family’s a big one.”

He recalled last summer, when he was talking to his wife Christine at their lake house in Georgia, she told him their son Jake was turning 40.

”It hit me like a ton of bricks that I missed all that time,” Arians said.

Arians, who spent more than four decades in coaching Dorance Armstrong Jr. Jersey Cowboys , has had health issues in recent years, including treatment for diverticulitis as well as a successful fight against kidney cancer last offseason.

He said the Cardinals had the best owner in the NFL ”by far” and called general manager Steve Keim his ”little brother.”

Keim’s voice cracked with emotion when he talked about his time with Arians.

”I don’t think there’s any doubt it’s going to be hard to replicate the kind of relationship we all had with Bruce and how special he was to us,” Keim said. ”There’s no doubt he’ll always hold a special place in my heart.”

Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said ”we’ll miss him a lot.”

Bidwill said the search for a new coach would begin immediately, and he had requests to other teams for permission to speak to assistant coaches going out Monday.

But Bidwill said there will be no rush to fill the job despite the many other head coaching openings in the league. He noted that Arians was the last of seven coaches to be hired five years ago.

”And I’m glad we didn’t get caught up like it was a race or something,” Bidwill said.

Arians won a franchise-record 50 games in his five seasons with Arizona.

Counting his stint as interim coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Arians went 59-35-1 as a head coach, including the playoffs.

Before that, he won two Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach in Pittsburgh Malik Jefferson Jersey Elite , the second one as offensive coordinator of the Steelers team that beat Arizona in the 2009 Super Bowl.

Arians first won NFL Coach of the Year honors for his work on an interim basis for the Indianapolis Colts in 2012 and again after directing the Cardinals to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth in 2014.

He was 50-32-1 in five seasons with the Cardinals, including a 4-1 mark in Seattle. The Cardinals were 1-2 in playoff games under him.

Arians’ best season was 2015, when quarterback Carson Palmer directed the league’s highest-scoring offense on a team that went 13-3 and earned the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Arizona escaped with an overtime playoff victory over Green Bay in the divisional playoff game, but was crushed at Carolina 49-15 in the NFC championship game.

The Cardinals went 7-8-1 in 2016 and 8-8 this past season, winning three of their last four.

Still uncertain is the status of Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Both are under contract for next season but Palmer turned 38 last week missed most of the season with a broken left arm. Fitzgerald said he hasn’t decided whether to come back for a 15th season. Fitzgerald finished second in the NFL this season with 109 catches.

Keim knows that finding a new franchise quarterback is the top priority once a coach is in place.

”Really, five years ago we started with no head coach and no quarterback and I feel like that ended up pretty good,” Keim said. ”I think that’s the way we need to approach this this time around.”

Arians began his coaching career 42 years ago as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech. He was an assistant to Bear Bryant for one season at Alabama before being hired as the head coach at Temple a job he held from 1983 to 1988.

He developed a reputation for his good work with quarterbacks, including Peyton Manning Youth Marcus Davenport Jersey , Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck.

Arians said he was forced out at Pittsburgh, ”refired” is how he put it, and was ready to step away from the game when Colts coach Chuck Pagano offered him the offensive coordinator job.

When Pagano had to leave the team for a time, Arians directed the Colts to a 9-3 record as interim coach.

That opened the way to come to Arizona, finally getting an NFL head coaching job at age 60.

He said he was planning to stay in the Phoenix area and that his foundation would continue its work for underprivileged children. He wants to stay close to the game and hinted at a broadcast job.

”Hell, I might be on your side,” he told reporters. ”I don’t know.”

DENVER (AP) Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals only made things tougher on the Denver Broncos 48 hours after their boss labeled them as soft.

Dalton’s three touchdown throws and a defense that contributed two takeaways helped the Bengals beat the Broncos 20-17 Sunday for their first win in Denver since 1975 Youth Joel Iyiegbuniwe Jersey , when franchise founder Paul Brown was their head coach.

”I didn’t know that stat,” Dalton said. ”It feels good anytime you can win. It’s tough to win on the road. For us, this is big.”

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis conveniently left out the fact that the Bengals had lost 10 in a row at Denver in prepping his team for this game.

”These guys weren’t even alive in ’75, were they?” Lewis said.

That year, Brown’s Bengals prevailed 17-16 at the old Mile High Stadium, which is now a parking lot.

”No, I don’t remember that,” cracked A.J. Green, who wasn’t born until 1988. ”I don’t keep up with history a lot.”

Denver’s dive is certainly reaching historic proportions.

Not only did the Broncos see their 10-game home winning streak against Cincinnati (4-6) snapped, but they lost their sixth straight game Avonte Maddox Jersey Eagles , their longest skid since 1990.

”This isn’t the culture here,” lamented quarterback Brock Osweiler, who just two years ago helped as the Broncos won Super Bowl 50. ”The standard here is to win championships, get to the playoffs every year and contend for Super Bowls, and right now we’re not playing football like that. So, it’s very frustrating.”

The Broncos (3-7) have been outscored by 100 points during their skid that led general manager John Elway to suggest over the weekend that “we got a little bit soft” after a 3-1 start that followed a perfect preseason.

”I was initially offended, but in some aspects he’s right,” said Broncos rookie coach Vance Joseph, who also received a vote of confidence from Elway, who suggested it was up to the players Justin Jones Jersey Chargers , not the coaching staff, to pull Denver out of its doldrums.

Players’ reactions to Elway’s insult ranged from anger to acceptance.

”None of us are soft,” fumed Brandon Marshall.

”He was telling the truth,” allowed Von Miller.

Trailing by a field goal, the Broncos got the ball back with 1:52 left on their 20-yard line, and on fourth-and-4 Osweiler’s low throw to Emmanuel Sanders was broken up by Dre Kirkpatrick, whose big play in the first half set the tone for Cincinnati’s historic win.

Kirkpatrick’s interception return nearly covered 102 yards. But he fumbled the ball at the Denver 15-yard line before smothering it at the 1.

“I’ve got to punch that in,” lamented Kirkpatrick.

Dalton had his back, connecting with Tyler Kroft for the score three plays later.

Because his first completion had lost a yard, Dalton had this oddball stat line: zero passing yards but one TD throw.

Dalton only ended up throwing for 154 yards while completing 15 of 25 passes Pernell McPhee Jersey Redskins , but he had a 29-yard TD toss to Alex Erickson for a 13-7 halftime lead, and an 18-yarder to Green, which made it 20-10 with just under nine minutes remaining.

Demaryius Thomas’ 17-yard touchdown catch pulled the Broncos within 20-17 with five minutes left.

But cornerback Bradley Roby, burned for the last two touchdowns, committed a crucial pass interference call on a third-down incompletion to Green which allowed the Bengals to burn off more time.

”We’re still in it,” Bengals receiver Brandon LaFell said. ”You look around the league, there’s a lot of teams 4-6, 5-5. So, we’re right in the thick of things.”

And the Broncos are still stuck in reverse.

FAST START: Shaq Barrett’s blocked punt set the Broncos up at the Bengals 29 in the opening minutes.

Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, who has stubbornly stuck with three-receiver sets as his base formation during Denver’s nosedive Dalton Schultz Jersey Cowboys , emptied his backfield on third-and-3 from the Cincinnati 4. That’s when Osweiler’s pass was picked off by Kirkpatrick.

The Broncos reached the Cincinnati 3 on their next drive and again lined up with an empty backfield. Only this time, C.J. Anderson motioned in from the left, took the handoff and sneaked across the goal line for Denver’s first rushing touchdown in the first quarter all season.

Brandon McManus’ extra point put Denver ahead 7-6. McManus nailed a 61-yarder at the end of the first half, but Marvin Lewis had called a timeout, and his do-over was blocked by KeiVarae Russell.

Anderson had a crucial fumble at midfield early in the fourth quarter that led to Cincinnati’s second touchdown.

TASTING A TURNAROUND: The Bengals are hoping this is the start of a season-saving run and they become the third team to reach the playoffs after a 3-6 start.

”Yeah?” Vontaze Burfict said when told the Bengals are only a game back in the wild card race. ”Don’t count us out yet.”

QUARTERBACK QUAGMIRE: Osweiler fell to 0-3 since supplanting Trevor Siemian, who was leap-frogged by Paxton Lynch for the first time Sunday when Lynch was the backup and Siemian inactive.

Asked if it was time to see conclusively if Lynch is a first-round bust or just a late bloomer, Joseph said, ”We’ll see. We’re going to watch the tape and see where we are as an offense. Obviously, he’s healthy now. He’s a young player with talent.”

Osweiler said he’s not worried about getting benched.
